Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Prabowo emphasized that public aspirations must be addressed, noting that several demands—such as the removal of “arrogant” legislators and the reduction of excessive incentives—will be acted upon immediately.
“They will begin rolling back certain policies in the DPR,” he said, referring to discussions on lawmakers’ allowances and a moratorium on overseas trips.
The president reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democratic principles, urging the public to express their views peacefully so they can be heard and responded to constructively.
However, Prabowo warned that criminal acts—such as vandalism, looting, and the destruction of public facilities—would not be tolerated. He instructed the National Defense Force (TNI) and the National Police to take firm action against those responsible.
“Let us work together to protect our environment, ensure the safety of our families, and defend our homeland,” he said, underscoring the importance of national unity and cooperation.
His remarks come in the wake of widespread protests and civil unrest triggered by public outrage over lawmakers’ conduct and excessive privileges.
The unrest has resulted in several fatalities, including 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, who was killed by a police tactical vehicle during a protest on Thursday.
In response to mounting public anger, House Speaker Puan Maharani has issued an apology and announced a formal evaluation of the DPR’s performance.
The NasDem Party has also taken disciplinary action by suspending two of its members, Ahmad Sahroni and Nafa Urbach, from the DPR.
