"Do not leave them unrepaired because it will trigger public trauma," he said after a coordination meeting on regional inflation control in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that the repair can be funded with the regional budget or sourced from public initiatives.
"If the regional budget is insufficient, we can use a grant mechanism. For instance, grants from other provincial governments, district governments with stronger fiscal capacity," he said.
Karnavian further said that the central government is open to possibilities to fund the repair.
Currently, the government is still coordinating to map out which regions can repair those facilities independently and those that need support, including calculating the total losses nationally.
The minister noted that, since August 25, 2025, protests have taken place in various regions. While some protests were carried out peacefully, others turned violent.
In addition to repairing the damaged facilities, regional governments are urged to hold a meeting with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) to discuss the current conditions in their respective regions.
Regional governments are expected to hold dialogue with the community leaders, religious leaders, and academicians, and hold events that encourage peace, such as communal prayers.
Furthermore, regional governments are also urged to intensify pro-people programs, such as cheap markets and social assistance, while halting ceremonial events.
The minister further emphasized that his ministry has postponed the approval of foreign travel requests for regional heads.
