Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said Peruvian authorities are making progress in the investigation into the killing of an Indonesian embassy staff member in Lima earlier this week.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stated that the Indonesian embassy is coordinating intensively with the local police, carrying out the investigation to unravel the motive and suspects involved in the murder of Zetro Leonardo Purba.

"The police are carrying out various works, including collecting evidence and obtaining surveillance camera records from the crime scene," Mulachela said in a statement here on Thursday.

The local police are coordinating with the prosecutor's office and have provided extra protection and supervision to the family of the late embassy staffer.

Mulachela also revealed that Purba had been autopsied on September 2. "We hope that his body can be returned home within this week," he added.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Lima has presented its diplomatic note to the Peruvian Foreign Ministry to request their attention to the case, according to the spokesperson.

Foreign Minister Sugiono has also contacted his Peruvian counterpart, Elmer Schialer, and appealed for a transparent, swift, and thorough investigation into the murder and for the prompt repatriation of Purba's body.

Zetro Leonardo Purba, a junior officer at the Indonesian Embassy in Lima, was shot and killed near his home on Monday (September 1).

Security footage shows the gunman waiting before firing three shots and fleeing on a motorbike. Nothing was stolen.

Purba had been in Peru for five months after serving at the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne.

Responding to the incident, Deputy Foreign Minister Anis Matta stated that the ministry will evaluate its protection scheme for Indonesian diplomats and staff abroad.

"Surely it will be a lesson. We will evaluate this case to improve the protection for our diplomats abroad," Matta stated after a meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives on Tuesday (September 2).
