Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) said halal certification enhances product value and protects consumers as the government continues to push for broader awareness among business owners.

“Halal certification not only provides added economic value for producers and marketers but also ensures consumer protection,” BPJPH Deputy Head Afriansyah Noor said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said the certification functions as both a legal requirement and a branding tool that increases product competitiveness.

Afriansyah emphasized that halal certification is mandated by Law No. 33 of 2014 and is compulsory for all businesses distributing products in Indonesia.

He called on the government to intensify education efforts across regions to raise awareness of halal standards, particularly in sectors such as food and cosmetics.

“Starting next year, cosmetics must also be halal-certified. All products must clearly state their halal status,” he said.

As part of these efforts, BPJPH recently partnered with the Indonesian Poultry Farmers Association (Pinsar) to conduct outreach in Kwala Bingai, Stabat Subdistrict, Langkat District, North Sumatra.

Addressing poultry farmers, Afriansyah underscored the importance of halal compliance in products like processed chicken, eggs, and their derivatives to safeguard consumers.

He noted that certification also guarantees quality, hygiene, and cleanliness.

“While live chickens are naturally halal, slaughtering and processing require certification. The same applies to eggs and related products,” he said.

During the event, BPJPH promoted Sehati, a government program offering free halal certification for micro and small enterprises (MSEs).

The public was also encouraged to join training programs to become Halal Product Process (PPH) companions—community members who assist MSEs in navigating the halal certification process.
