Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso stated that 404 markets in 194 districts and cities require revitalization, with an estimated budget of around Rp2.42 trillion.

“The Ministry of Trade has received proposals for 404 markets from 194 districts and cities, and based on calculations, the total cost for these 404 markets amounts to approximately Rp2.42 trillion,” Budi said in Jakarta on Thursday.

However, he acknowledged that the revitalization program could not yet be implemented due to the ministry’s limited budget.

One of the strategies the ministry is considering is introducing management programs that encourage traders to expand into digital markets to promote their products.

Santoso stressed that market revitalization remained essential. He also proposed that traditional or community markets should be designed to serve multiple purposes, including office space.

“Market revitalization must continue because markets today serve more than just a place to shop. For example, in Yogyakarta, community markets can even have offices built above them while maintaining clean and organized spaces below,” he said.

The provision of traditional markets is part of the government’s efforts to accelerate regional development, particularly in the trade sector.

The government’s revitalization program also covers market management, including educating traders through digitalization initiatives that introduce online shopping systems using various digital platforms.

These efforts are expected to enhance competitiveness against the growing number of modern retail stores. In 2024, the number of digitalized traditional markets reached 5,807, while 306,964 traders had adopted digital platforms.
