Sijunjung (ANTARA) - The Deputy Chairman of Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) from West Sumatra Province, Andre Rosiade, stated that all factions in Senayan have agreed to abolish housing allowances for lawmakers following public protests in recent weeks.

“The decision made yesterday was that all factions agreed housing allowances have been removed,” Andre said during a working visit to Sijunjung District, West Sumatra.

Andre’s remarks were made in response to the 17+8 demands voiced by hundreds of students in front of the DPR/MPR Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (Sept. 4).

In addition to abolishing housing allowances, Andre said all factions also agreed to impose a moratorium on overseas working visits. He added that the House has also endorsed reforms to improve DPR RI’s service to the public.

“Other matters are still being decided by the DPR RI leadership,” he said.

During his visit to West Sumatra, Andre emphasized that the DPR, together with the government and other state institutions, will strive to meet and implement the demands expressed by students and the wider public.

The 17+8 Indonesia Berbenah Collective, consisting of influencers, musicians, communities, and civil society networks, directly submitted a physical copy of the people’s 17+8 demands to the DPR RI.

The submission of this document complemented previous efforts, including social media campaigns, informal outreach to DPR leaders and political parties, and emails sent to around 580 lawmakers.

The 17+8 demands represent a compilation of aspirations from various sources, including calls from hundreds of civil society organizations, discussions involving millions of netizens, statements from legal research institutions, and online petitions.

The 17+8 People's Demands, "Transparency, Reform, Empathy," were uploaded by several public figures on social media. These demands include 17 demands to be resolved within one week and eight demands with a one-year deadline.

The first of the 17 demands is to form an investigative team into the death of ride-hailing motorcycle driver, Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by a police armored vehicle, as well as all victims of violence by security forces, to stop the involvement of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) in civilian affairs, and to demand DPR participation in public forums.

The other eight demands include a major reform of the DPR, political party reform, tax reform, and the immediate ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill.
