"Sports is not merely about competition and achievement, but also a powerful vehicle to foster national unity," he said during the 2025 National Sports Day summit at the Cibubur Youth Elite Sports Center in Jakarta on Tuesday.
This year's theme, "Sports Unite the Nation," is particularly relevant amid the social and political challenges facing the country, Hidayat noted.
He highlighted that sports instill values of sportsmanship, respect for opponents, and dignity in accepting results — principles that can be applied not only in daily life but also in nation-building.
"In sports, the greatest victory is not just lifting a trophy, but learning to appreciate one another, provide support, and view differences as a strength that unites us," he emphasized.
Hidayat added that National Sports Day serves as a reminder that sports are a national movement to unite the people, build character, and strengthen the nation’s spirit.
He urged regional governments to build more sports facilities at the sub-district and village levels to improve access. With better facilities, communities can not only stay active but also learn solidarity and unity through sports, he said.
More than 2,000 participants attended the event, including athletes, coaches, sports federation officials, and representatives from various sports institutions.
