"We guarantee that all rights of the suspects involved in the anarchic demonstration in Makassar are fulfilled," Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said on Wednesday.
Mahendra made the statement after visiting detainees at the South Sulawesi Regional Police Headquarters in Makassar. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring that all legal proceedings are carried out transparently, fairly, and in line with procedure.
He confirmed that 42 individuals have been arrested so far, including two in Palopo City.
"My visit to Makassar is based on direct directives from President Prabowo Subianto. I was instructed to monitor the legal processes closely and to ensure that the rights of the suspects are protected," he noted.
The suspects are currently held in three locations: 27 at Makassar Police Station, 13 at the South Sulawesi Police HQ detention center, and two in Palopo.
On the evening of August 29, a riot broke out in Makassar and continued into the following day, leading to the burning of the DPRD building, two police posts, and damage to several public facilities.
Four people were killed — three in the fire and one online motorcycle taxi driver who was beaten by a mob — while several others sustained injuries.
