Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Alms Agency (Baznas) plays a key role in promoting social equity and driving national transformation, an official said on Wednesday.

Warsito, Deputy for Character and National Identity Development at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK), described Baznas as more than just a zakat collection body — it is a catalyst for change.

"When we talk about human quality, the pillars are always the same: health, education, and the economy. Kemenko PMK is tasked with overseeing these areas, and zakat has a role to play in all of them," he said.

Warsito emphasized that well-managed zakat can strengthen the three pillars of human development: education, health, and the economy. He said Baznas has a unique position to support communities across these areas while promoting equity and resilience.

He also highlighted the opportunity for Baznas to pioneer digital transformation in zakat management. In an era defined by technology and transparency, he argued that services must evolve to meet public expectations.

Warsito proposed the development of a national zakat application that would allow the public to track the distribution of funds in real time, thereby strengthening trust and demonstrating zakat’s impact on society.

"How can we be outdone by bank agents who remind customers every month? We are calling people to do good — so zakat officers must be proactive in engaging, reporting, and thanking donors. A digital system can support all of this," he said.

"This integrated application could be initiated by Baznas — real-time, transparent, and a model for national implementation," he added.

Beyond addressing social issues after they arise, Warsito urged Baznas to take a proactive upstream role in shaping national character.

"Can zakat play a role upstream? How can it be used to build moral strength and mental resilience — instilling a spirit of hard work, perseverance, and strong character? Because often, social problems stem from weak morals and mental attitudes," he said.

Warsito concluded that Baznas, through both social programs and digital innovation, could become a cornerstone of national transformation and human development.
