South Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - Indonesia held a funeral on Thursday for Zetro Leonardo Purba, a staff member of its embassy in Peru, who was shot dead earlier this month in Lima. The motive for the killing remains unknown.

Acting Foreign Ministry Secretary General Heru Hartanto Subolo led the funeral procession at Sari Mulya Public Cemetery in South Tangerang, Banten.

Zetro’s body, which had been kept at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Jakarta since Tuesday, arrived at the cemetery shortly after noon, accompanied by his family, Foreign Ministry staff and representatives of the Peruvian Embassy.

“We are all here to see off the late Zetro. May he find the best place in God’s sight,” Subolo said, offering condolences to the family on behalf of the ministry.

Peruvian police carried out an autopsy earlier this week as part of their investigation. The Indonesian Embassy in Lima has been coordinating with authorities there to monitor progress in the case.

Police in Lima are working with prosecutors, but so far have not determined a motive or identified any suspects. Subolo said Indonesian citizens in Peru remain safe.

“There has been no information about harassment of our citizens in Peru. For Zetro, I do not know the cause yet. We will wait for information from the Peruvian Ambassador, who says this investigation is a priority,” he said.

Local media reported that Zetro, 33, was cycling with his wife on September 1 when he was shot three times by an unidentified attacker just meters from his home in Lima’s Lince District.

He was rushed to the Javier Prado Clinic but died of his wounds. His wife survived the attack.

Zetro had been posted to Lima only five months ago, after serving at the Indonesian Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia.
