Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s newly inaugurated Deputy Minister of Forestry, Rohmat Marzuki, pledged to give his utmost in helping the country tackle challenges and advance programs linked to the forestry sector.

During a position handover ceremony in Jakarta on Thursday, he noted that the Ministry of Forestry faces a number of pressing issues, including the need to accelerate progress in achieving the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target.

In this context, Marzuki referred to Indonesia’s ambition to reach a condition in which the forestry and other land use (FOLU) sector absorbs more emissions than it produces by 2030.

The deputy minister, who replaced Sulaiman Umar Shiddiq in President Prabowo Subianto’s Red and White Cabinet, also emphasized the importance of promoting the social forestry initiative, strengthening forest protection, improving forest fire control, and maximizing the potential and value of non-timber forest products.

He expressed confidence that his background and expertise would help in achieving these goals.

“Given my degree in forestry from UGM (Gadjah Mada University), I have long had a deep connection with forestry and the environment. I believe that forests stand as a living space, a source of knowledge, and a pillar of life for communities,” Marzuki said.

He then described his cabinet appointment as a valuable opportunity to contribute more to the state and the nation through both the preservation and sustainable use of Indonesia’s forest areas.

At the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (September 17), President Prabowo inaugurated 11 leaders of ministries and other state institutions, including Marzuki, who is now tasked with supporting Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni in ensuring the sustainability of the country’s forests.

He shares responsibilities for protecting forest biodiversity, managing national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, and ensuring fairness in the use of customary forests.
