Banjarbaru (ANTARA) - The South Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service and the FOLU Net Sink 2030 implementing partner team have initiated efforts to rehabilitate forests and land in three villages in the Meratus Mountain area of Hulu Sungai Tengah district.

The South Kalimantan Forestry Service said in Banjarbaru, Friday, that as an initial step, along with the FOLU team, it conducted outreach to the concerned communities in Tapuk, Limpasu, and Tanah Habang villages from July 15–17, 2025.

The outreach was conducted in collaboration with Norway, which has pledged support for Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 initiative.

“We conducted outreach in the three villages, targeting 150 hectares of land located in Hulu Sungai Tengah district,” head of the forest and land rehabilitation (RHL) section of the forestry service, Engkos Koswara, informed.

Koswara highlighted that the FOLU program aims to intensify environmental conservation efforts, particularly forest conservation, at several designated locations using a sustainable approach.

“During the outreach, we also conducted an inventory of RHL locations in the three villages,” he said.

He explained that the activity is a part of FOLU NC 2&3, a strategic program supporting the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target of reducing CO2 equivalent emissions by 140 million tons.

According to Koswara, the nature conservation collaboration represents a national and global commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the forestry sector.

The outreach activities conducted with village residents were the initial step in aligning shared targets, strengthening institutions, and providing a forum for discussion in preparation for rehabilitation implementation to ensure tangible benefits to the environment and the community.

Based on the inventory results, the forestry service and the FOLU team have established an indicative plan for forest and land rehabilitation covering 150 hectares in the three villages.

The area will be prioritized in the reforestation program to improve the ecological function of the forest while enhancing the welfare of the surrounding community.

“We invite all parties to participate actively in supporting the reforestation movement. The rehabilitation program is expected to be a concrete step in restoring critical land while strengthening ecosystem resilience in South Kalimantan,” Koswara said.
