Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian urged all 38 provinces of Indonesia to closely watch the trend of the country's month-to-month (m-to-m) inflation rate that was recorded at 0.41 percent in December, the highest in 2023.

"Although the increase in the m-to-m inflation is not too significant, it still indicates an increase in regions," he noted in a statement received in Banjarbaru City, South Kalimantan, on Wednesday (January 3).

The minister made the statement while chairing the Coordination Meeting on Regional Inflation Control 2023 broadcast virtually from Jakarta.

"The rate of national inflation is still controlled at the level of 2.61 percent on a year-on-year basis throughout 2023. However, we need to remain vigilant about the figure recorded on the m-to-m basis despite not experiencing a high increase," he affirmed.

He further noted that in general, Indonesian people did not see significant increases in the prices of staple goods, resulting in a balance between producers and consumers.

Karnavian then pointed out that some regions in the country were still experiencing a rather unstable inflation rate while encouraging those whose inflation rate exceeded the national figure to pay close attention to the rate.

The minister then went on to note that Indonesia ranked 53rd among 186 countries in terms of the lowest inflation rate, with 10 regions recording rates below the national figure.

One of the provinces whose inflation rate stood below the national inflation rate was South Kalimantan.

Expert staff at the South Kalimantan Regional Secretariat, Sulkan, stated that the province's inflation rate was recorded at only 2.43 percent.

He invited the province's Regional Inflation Control Team to continue to work to stabilize the prices of basic commodities to further suppress the inflation rate.

"This is quite a preferable figure. Hence, we need to maintain it, and if possible, further decrease it," he remarked.
