Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has condemned Israel's airstrike on the Holy Family Church in the Gaza Strip, calling it a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, human decency, and the sanctity of places of worship.

"Indonesia condemns the attack on the Holy Family Church in Gaza, the only Catholic Church in Gaza, which resulted in the loss of innocent civilian lives," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said in a post on platform X on Friday.

The ministry emphasized that religious sites, medical facilities, and all civilian infrastructure must not be targeted and are protected under international law.

"It further reflects Israel’s lack of commitment to fulfill its legal obligations as an Occupying Power, let alone to peace and stability in the region," it added.

Indonesia also urged the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to take concrete action to pressure Israel to end hostilities and resume negotiations based on a two-state solution.

The Israeli strike on Thursday killed two civilians and injured at least 13 others, including parish priest Father Gabriel Romanelli, a three-year-old child, and a person with disabilities.

The church, which had been sheltering displaced Palestinian Christians and Muslims since October 2023, sustained heavy damage along with surrounding facilities.

In response, the Palestinian Church Committee called on global church leaders and Christian figures to publicly condemn the Israeli assault.

In previous airstrikes on Gaza, the Israeli military has also bombed other churches, including the Gaza Baptist Church and the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrius — Gaza’s oldest church and the third-oldest Christian church in the world.
