“The responses have been positive. Associations understand our move and are preparing for implementation,” he told the press at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Friday.
While supporting the policy, industry actors urged the government to ensure transparency in the structure of the export company, which will operate under Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara.
“What they are asking for are transparency and clarity regarding the SOE,” Hartarto said.
However, the minister declined to elaborate on plans for DSI’s office or comment further on the appointment of Luke Thomas Mahony as president director of the new company.
“We are not giving comments, but we are hoping for immediate formation of solid management,” he stated.
Separately at the Presidential Palace, Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani defended Mahony’s appointment, citing the Australian national’s strong track record in managing trades.
“Most importantly, he has experience in trading and minerals. He has led several mineral companies and is well-connected,” he said, praising Mahony’s performance at Danantara and his ability to speak Indonesian.
Mahony has served as senior executive vice president for business performance and optimization at Danantara since September 2025. He previously held a director position at PT Vale Indonesia.
Roeslani, who also serves as Danantara CEO, said on Thursday (May 21) that his team had begun engaging stakeholders to explain the government’s DSI policy and gather feedback.
He said discussions involved the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI), and palm oil industry players, among others.
At a House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session the previous day, President Prabowo Subianto highlighted a new government regulation governing natural resource exports. He said the regulation stipulates that an SOE would become the sole exporter of palm oil, coal, and ferroalloys.
