Jakarta (ANTARA) - Newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir pledged to drive innovation and unity to advance Indonesia’s youth and sports sectors during his official handover ceremony in Jakarta on Thursday.

“We must push for breakthroughs and conduct evaluations. Big dreams require a foundation of unity,” Erick said.

He praised his predecessors, including outgoing Minister Dito Ariotedjo and other former ministers present at the event, for laying a solid vision and blueprint for development.

Erick emphasized the importance of consolidating their legacies as a strong basis for future progress.

“I will review and integrate policies left by former ministers. There are no divisions among us,” he added.

Erick cited Japan as a model of progress achieved through self-reflection, despite challenges like an aging population.

He noted many countries have transformed youth development by empowering young leaders to drive innovation and reform.

“This means there are things we must recalibrate together. The President has made it clear my task is far from easy,” Erick said.

Highlighting Indonesia’s demographic advantage of over 100 million young people, he stressed the need to strengthen youth capabilities.

“We must cultivate a generation of young Indonesians who dare to dream, achieve, and love this nation,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by several former Youth and Sports Ministers, including Adhyaksa Dault (2004–2009), Andi Alfian Mallarangeng (2009–2012), Agung Laksono (2012–2013), Roy Suryo (2013–2014), Zainudin Amali (2019–2023), and Dito Ariotedjo (2023–2025).
