Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said student creativity—especially in game development—is a vital asset for Indonesia’s digital transformation.

“Games in Indonesia have the potential to become a top priority for digital transformation,” Meutya stated in an official release received in Jakarta on Sunday.

During her visit to the GameTech Expo organized by students of the Multi Media College (MMTC) Yogyakarta on Saturday (September 20), the minister highlighted that the creativity of young Indonesians could drive the growth of the local gaming industry.

She noted that student projects in games, animation, and digital entertainment showcased at the exhibition demonstrated the younger generation’s ability to build the country’s gaming ecosystem and gain international recognition.

Several MMTC creations, including the animation movies Jumbo and Ikan Mas Tur Dedari, have already been appreciated by audiences across ASEAN and beyond.

“I am very proud because the works are extraordinary. I tried some of the games myself, and they were very exciting. We must be proud and confident that Indonesia’s gaming industry will continue to grow,” Meutya said.

She added that MMTC students have successfully developed games with strong local cultural values.

One example is the animation Ikan Mas, which draws on a Balinese story of family and traditional wisdom. According to her, this proves that games are not only entertainment but also a medium for cultural preservation.

“We must strengthen the domestic gaming industry so that we are not merely consumers of foreign products. Through works like these, Indonesian culture can reach the global stage,” she emphasized.

Meutya noted that the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs continues to support the national gaming ecosystem through the Indonesian Game Developer Exchange (IGDX), a platform that connects local developers with industry players and global markets.

“With the innovative spirit of students, the GameTech Exhibition shows that Indonesia’s young generation is ready to bring local games to the world stage,” she concluded.

ndonesia’s gaming industry, a key creative economy subsector, enjoys strong potential as the largest gaming market in Southeast Asia. Government policy, including Presidential Regulation No. 19 of 2024, supports its growth.

Indonesia has the largest number of gamers in Southeast Asia, making it a highly promising market for the industry’s growth.

However, the sector still faces challenges such as limited early-stage funding, intense competition from dominant foreign games, and the need for specific talent and stronger collaboration between government, communities, and businesses—factors essential for making gaming a sustainable pillar of the nation’s digital economy.
