Batam (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian praised Riau Islands Province (Kepri) for successfully entering Singapore’s food export market amid changing regional dynamics.

Johor, Malaysia, traditionally Singapore’s main supplier, is now prioritizing its domestic demand, opening opportunities for Kepri’s poultry and hydroponic exports.

“Kepri can capture Singapore’s food export market. There is strong demand for poultry and hydroponic products. Coordinate with Governor Ansar to join this effort,” Tito said at a Sumatra regional meeting in Batam on Sunday.

Governor Ansar Ahmad said the provincial government, partnering with the Trade Ministry, has launched an Export Hub at Batam’s Public Service Mall to connect Riau Islands products with international markets, especially Singapore.

“Johor is focusing on domestic needs, and the Singapore Food Security Agency has engaged with us multiple times,” Ansar noted.

The province has exported around 6,000 tons of hydroponic crops, supplying only two to three malls—indicating significant growth potential.

In addition, 1.5 million live chickens from Bintan District have been exported to several Singapore malls.

Ansar said ongoing talks with Singapore’s Food Security Agency aim to expand export commodities, fostering cross-border cooperation.

“Singapore seeks external supplies, and this partnership can make Riau Islands and Sumatra key sustainable food suppliers,” he said.

Minister Tito urged other Sumatra regional leaders to seize similar opportunities to boost local economies.

With strategic location and abundant resources, Riau Islands stand as a promising partner for Singapore’s food security and regional economic growth.
