Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani commended President Prabowo Subianto's maiden speech at the United Nations during a UN summit on Palestine on Monday.

The DPR speaker opined that the president's position as the fifth leader to speak at the UN High-Level Conference on Palestine and the Two-State Solution reflected the global community's respect for Indonesia.

"Indonesia has been honoured that its president can deliver his remarks early. It is an honour for Indonesia," Maharani stated at the Parliament Complex here on Tuesday.

Maharani said that Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia's unwavering support for Palestine in his remarks. The president, she said, has also emphasized Indonesia's foreign policy principle of being free and active.

"As an Indonesian national, I believe it was the right moment to voice Indonesia at the global level," she remarked.

In his remarks, Prabowo condemned all acts of violence against civilians, including women and children in Gaza. Tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza have lost their lives as a result of the genocide carried out by the Israeli military.

“We condemn all acts of violence against innocent civilians. Therefore, it is today with dignity that we gather to take our historical responsibility. This responsibility speaks not only to the fate of Palestine but also to the future of Israel, and also the very credibility of the United Nations,” Prabowo stated.

Reaffirming commitment to the two-state solution, the president opened the possibility of Indonesia recognizing the State of Israel — but only if Israel first recognizes Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.

The conference, held during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, was co-organized by France and Saudi Arabia, represented respectively by French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Leaders and representatives from 33 nations and regional bodies, including the European Union and Arab League, addressed the summit, calling for renewed international efforts toward lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.
