Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - A magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck parts of Bali and East Java on Thursday was caused by activity along an active fault line, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

“This was a shallow earthquake triggered by an active fault,” said BMKG’s Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Daryono, in a statement.

BMKG later revised the earthquake’s magnitude to 5.3 following further analysis.

As of 5:40 p.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA), five aftershocks had been recorded, the strongest of which measured magnitude 3.3.

The tectonic quake was felt most strongly in Banyuwangi, East Java, and Penebel, Bali, with an intensity level of IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At this level, many residents felt the tremor indoors and outdoors, with reports of pottery breaking, windows and doors rattling, and walls creaking.

In other areas such as Lumajang (East Java), and parts of Bali including Kuta, Denpasar, and Buleleng, the tremor was felt at intensity level III MMI — comparable to the sensation of a passing truck.

Residents in Jember and Bondowoso reported feeling similar intensity, ranging from II to III MMI.

Lower-intensity shaking (MMI II) was reported in Pasuruan, Surabaya, Situbondo, South Kuta, Pamekasan, Mataram, and West Lombok, where some people felt the tremor and light hanging objects swayed.

Daryono urged the public to remain calm and inspect buildings for any structural damage.

The quake struck at 5:04 p.m. local time in the Bali Sea at a depth of 12 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 7.82° South Latitude and 114.47° East Longitude. The nearest city to the epicenter is Banyuwangi, about 46 kilometers to the northeast, while Denpasar lies roughly 125 kilometers to the northwest.

BMKG confirmed the earthquake posed no tsunami threat.
