The two discussed strengthening this cooperation during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, on Thursday.
"As two countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, we have a shared interest in promoting marine biodiversity research and cooperation in protecting maritime ecosystems," said Sugiono.
The Foreign Minister stated that the meeting marked the strengthening of the two countries' 45-year partnership.
In addition to discussing opportunities to enhance cooperation in the maritime sector, the two ministers also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation in trade, sustainable development, science, technology, and culture.
"For the past 45 years, Indonesia and Ecuador have been strong partners in advancing shared interests, including in the economic, scientific, and cultural sectors," said Sugiono.
The two Foreign Ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Strengthening Diplomatic Capacity, which will serve as a new foundation for strengthening diplomatic relations and expanding development cooperation in various fields.
Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Ecuador were officially established on April 29, 1980. The Ecuadorian government opened its representative office in Jakarta in December 2004, while the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Quito opened on November 11, 2010.
Economic cooperation between Indonesia and Ecuador offers numerous opportunities for further development. In trade, Ecuador is a non-traditional market and Indonesia's fifth-largest partner in Latin America, after Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
