“We are working to ensure that this national training center in Cibubur becomes fully operational by next year,” Erick said in Jakarta on Friday.
The CYESC facility was conceptualized during the tenure of former Sports Minister Zainudin Amali, with construction initiated under his successor, Dito Ariotedjo. Its design was inspired by Japan’s Ajinomoto National Training Center.
Built with a budget of Rp274 billion (approximately US$17.5 million), the center is intended to serve as a national training hub for junior athletes.
It is already equipped with facilities for various sports, including swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, fencing, wushu, sport climbing, volleyball, basketball, archery, and badminton.
Erick Thohir noted that the facility still requires additional infrastructure, such as dormitories, sport science facilities, and other support systems to accommodate around 14 priority sports disciplines.
To accelerate development, just over a week after his appointment to replace Dito Ariotedjo, Erick met with the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing on Thursday (September 25) to discuss the project’s continuation.
He confirmed that the Ministry of Public Works will fully support the facility’s completion, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision to develop athletes capable of excelling on the international stage.
The minister also made his first visit to the site to inspect ongoing construction and encourage young athletes currently training at the facility.
He urged them to train with maximum effort and cultivate a winning mentality in preparation for upcoming competitions at the Southeast Asian, Asian, and Olympic levels.
