Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto said that graduates in social sciences and management dominate Indonesia’s higher education landscape, accounting for over one million graduates.

“There are 1,087,637 graduates in social sciences and management, representing 61.59 percent of the total 7,607,752 university graduates in Indonesia,” Yuliarto remarked at the National Assembly of Professors of State Universities with Legal Entities (MDGB PTN-BH) here on Friday.

He added that 323,163 graduates, or 18.30 percent, came from life sciences and medicine, followed by 219,429 graduates, or 12.43 percent, in engineering and technology.

Meanwhile, arts and humanities produced 94,730 graduates or 5.36 percent, and natural sciences accounted for 40,883 graduates or 2.32 percent.

The minister explained that the dominance of social sciences and management aligns with the number of study programs and active students in these fields.

Currently, Indonesia has 7.6 million active college students across 29,796 study programs.

Nationally, the Ministry records a total of 4,614 higher education institutions, consisting of public universities, private universities, government-affiliated institutions, and public service colleges.

In total, these institutions host 9.9 million students, supported by 303,067 lecturers and 249,375 administrative staff.

Based on this, the economic turnover across all universities in Indonesia is estimated to reach Rp390 trillion or around US$23.3 billion.

Yuliarto also highlighted that several Indonesian universities have made it into the global rankings for environmental impact. Among those in the Top 100 are Airlangga University, Indonesia University, and Gadjah Mada University.

Other institutions in the Top 300 include IPB University, ITB, ITS, and Padjadjaran University, while those in the Top 600 include BINUS, Diponegoro University, UNS, Hasanuddin University, Telkom University, UPH, and Brawijaya University.
