Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian and Iranian governments agreed to increase cooperation in eradicating narcotics smuggling during an audience between the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Jakarta, Thursday (9/25).

BNN Head Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto stated that the cooperation includes information exchange, assistance with detection tools, rehabilitation methods, and uncovering smuggling cases.

"This collaboration is a strategic step to combat the illicit trafficking of narcotics originating from the Middle East and the Golden Triangle region," Seto said on the occasion, as quoted from a statement confirmed here on Friday.

He said the BNN was also interested in studying the program implemented by Iran in the border region, especially considering that there are illegal marijuana cultivation areas in Aceh.

Meanwhile, Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi congratulated the Head of BNN on his inauguration and on the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

The Iranian delegation expressed their readiness to coordinate with the BNN and offered potential cooperation in various areas, including smuggling detection, prevention, and rehabilitation practices.

Iran, which is geographically close to drug-producing countries, has become a transit route for drug smuggling to the West and Europe.

On that occasion, the Iranian Ambassador offered Indonesia assistance in the form of detection equipment and trained K9 detection units to track smuggling.

They also shared experiences about the complexities of Iran's border with Afghanistan, where drug smuggling is a major source of problems for Afghanistan's economic growth.

To address these issues, Boroujerdi said Iran is carrying out community empowerment programs in Afghanistan, such as training farmers to grow saffron and rice.

The meeting aims to follow up on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was previously agreed upon by both parties in an effort to eradicate the illicit trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursors.

As part of the cooperation, the Iranian Ambassador also invited the Head of BNN to visit Iran to directly observe their border surveillance practices.

Iran also proposed regular meetings, both online and offline, between the BNN and Iran.
