Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian researchers say galangal, a spice widely grown across the country, has strong potential as a natural ingredient in modern herbal medicine due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.

"Galangal can suppress inflammatory mediators in diseases such as hepatitis and arthritis, and damage bacterial cell membranes to fight certain pathogens," said Afi Candra Trinugraha, a researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), in a statement on Tuesday.

The plant, known scientifically as Alpinia galanga, contains several bioactive compounds, including galangin, flavonoids, acetoxychavicol acetate, and essential oils.

These compounds support digestion, boost the immune system, and promote skin health, Afi said.

He urged the public to see galangal as more than just a cooking spice and instead recognize its value in supporting a healthy lifestyle.

Galangal's medicinal potential also opens opportunities for research and product development, Afi added.

He said the food industry could use it as a functional ingredient, while the pharmaceutical industry could develop modern herbal drugs based on its bioactive content.

Natural skincare products may also benefit from galangal extract due to its skin-healing and antibacterial properties.

BRIN is continuing its research on galangal to meet growing demand for safe and effective natural ingredients.

"Galangal-based products could become a key commodity for national health and food security, while also supporting Indonesia's self-sufficiency in medicinal raw materials," Afi said.

Traditionally consumed as a herbal drink, galangal is believed to relieve inflammation, aid digestion, strengthen immunity, and ease respiratory issues.

Scientific studies support its effectiveness in reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels, lowering the risk of degenerative diseases, and potentially inhibiting cancer cell growth in preclinical trials.

Further research is needed to confirm some of these effects in humans.
