Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the third amendment to Law No. 10 of 2009 on Tourism, enacting it into law to ensure that tourism development remains inclusive and sustainable.

The approval was granted during the DPR’s 6th Plenary Meeting of the 2025–2026 session, held at the parliamentary complex on Thursday and chaired by Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad.

“Can the bill be approved as law?” Ahmad asked, prompting unanimous agreement from members of the House.

The Chair of DPR Commission VII stated that the revision is essential to ensure tourism development becomes more inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial to local communities.

He explained that the amended law explicitly promotes community-based tourism, cultural preservation, and adaptation to global trends, including digital transformation.

According to him, the previous legal framework was no longer sufficient to address the growing complexity of tourism development.

He added that emerging models of sustainable tourism, integrated destination management, disaster mitigation, and digital economy trends require a more adaptive and comprehensive legal foundation.

“This bill fills that legal gap and provides legal certainty for all stakeholders,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism emphasized tourism’s critical role in driving economic growth and national development through job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

However, she acknowledged that current tourism practices face challenges such as environmental degradation and the erosion of local cultures due to uncontrolled tourism and cultural assimilation.

“For these reasons, the DPR and the government agreed to revise and strengthen tourism policy,” she stated.

Earlier, during a working meeting on the bill, the government affirmed its commitment to incorporating elements such as tourism ecosystems, education and human resources, and tourism as a tool for cultural diplomacy.
