Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will issue a regulation within a week to govern the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which aims to improve access to healthy food, Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan said on Thursday.

“Hopefully in a week it will be done, regarding the presidential regulation and instruction. What is the content like? Please wait for a week,” Hasan told a press conference in Jakarta.

The directive will define the roles, authority and responsibilities of regional governments, ministries and institutions in managing MBG, as well as coordination mechanisms among them, he said.

Hasan said the program is designed to provide nutritious meals to strengthen human resources but acknowledged its large scale and impact present challenges.

“Of course there are shortcomings. However, the government’s commitment is clear: an immediate response. The president has instructed comprehensive improvements in MBG governance,” he added.

The regulation is being prepared by the State Secretariat Ministry, and the Government Communication Office will update the public on its progress, he said.

Hasan stressed that the government would ensure the program follows standard operating procedures so beneficiaries receive safe, high-quality food.

“Children’s safety is not just about numbers, it is our top priority. We want great and smart children. Free nutritious meals are a basic right,” he said.

The government has also convened a coordination meeting to mitigate mass food poisoning incidents linked to the program.

A new set of standards has been imposed on Nutrition Fulfillment Units (SPPGs), which must now obtain Hygiene Sanitation, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), and halal certificates.

Internal monitoring will be strengthened by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), while the Health Ministry, the Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), and the Home Affairs Ministry will assist with external oversight.
