A forensic team from the Special Crimes Division (Ditreskrimsus) and the police forensic laboratory (Labfor) has been on-site since Thursday (Oct. 2) to examine the blast area. Investigators have also begun questioning refinery employees.
“The forensic team and Pertamina staff are already at the scene,” Riau Police Spokesperson Senior Commissioner Anom Karibianto said in Pekanbaru on Sunday.
He explained that the investigation could only begin once the area was declared safe and all flames were fully extinguished.
“We have to wait until everything is completely cool and clear. We’ll share updates as the probe continues,” he added.
Agustiawan, Area Manager for Communication, Relations & CSR at Pertamina Dumai, confirmed the joint investigation with police and said the company’s internal team was also involved. Several workers have already provided statements.
“Inafis (Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System) from Riau Police and our internal team have started the investigation. Some staff have been interviewed,” he said.
Pertamina Dumai management stated it fully supports the investigation and is cooperating with authorities.
The explosion occurred Wednesday night (Oct. 1) at the H2-12 hydroplant unit, which was under maintenance. The fire was contained later that evening, and no casualties were reported.
Repairs to the damaged unit are ongoing as part of post-incident recovery efforts. Police have not yet confirmed the cause of the blast. The site remains restricted as forensic teams continue their examination.
Despite the fire, fuel supply in the northern Sumatra (Sumbagut) region remains stable.
Fahrougi Andriani Sumampouw, Area Manager for Communication, Relations & CSR at Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Sumbagut, said all fuel services are operating normally through official distribution channels.
“Pertamina is working with distributors, local governments, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to ensure the safe and smooth distribution of fuel and LPG,” he said.
