“The goal is to align hearts and minds. Everyone—parents, students, principals, teachers, dorm staff, and administrators—must share the same vision,” Yusuf said during a visit to a Sekolah Rakyat facility.
Sekolah Rakyat is a government initiative aimed at reducing poverty through integrated and sustainable education, empowerment, and social support for underprivileged families.
The minister stressed the need for strong collaboration between schools, parents, and local governments to ensure the program's success and long-term impact.
He also emphasized the importance of provincial and district governments in overseeing implementation to ensure it remains on target.

Yusuf said the program reflects President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to addressing poverty with measurable outcomes. Each year, Sekolah Rakyat targets disadvantaged households, offering education, empowerment, and assistance such as home improvement aid.
“After five years, selected families will also receive BPJS Kesehatan health insurance coverage as part of the comprehensive support,” he said.
To maintain fairness and transparency, Yusuf urged the East Kalimantan administration to closely monitor student recruitment and school operations.
“Only students from low-income families are eligible. There must be no favoritism or payment involved,” he said.
Unlike traditional schools, Sekolah Rakyat has an extended orientation period—lasting up to two or three months—to help students adjust to the boarding school environment and develop discipline.
“Some students may experience homesickness in the early stages, but I am confident things will improve over time,” he said.
Yusuf reaffirmed that fostering a supportive environment built on empathy and shared responsibility is essential to the program’s long-term success.
