Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA) - West Sumatra's Immigration Office revealed on Wednesday that Malaysian national Nur Amira can only obtain Indonesian citizenship through marriage to an Indonesian and a formal citizenship application.

Head of West Sumatra Immigration, Nurudin, said citizenship requires fulfilling several conditions, including marriage to an Indonesian and applying under Article 19 of Law No. 12 of 2006.

Nur Amira is currently detained at the Agam Immigration Detention Center for violating Indonesian immigration laws. Authorities are coordinating with the Malaysian Consulate for her deportation.

Her case is complicated by her 15-year-old daughter, Zahira, born from her 2009 marriage to an Indonesian citizen from Payakumbuh. The couple divorced in 2015, and Nur Amira left the child behind.

Other paths to citizenship include naturalization for individuals contributing to Indonesia, such as athletes, or for dual nationals choosing citizenship between ages 18 and 21.

However, marriage remains the most viable option for Nur Amira. Despite marrying in 2009, she never applied for a limited stay permit or Indonesian citizenship as required under Article 19.

To qualify for citizenship through marriage, applicants must hold a limited stay permit and have lived in Indonesia for five consecutive years or ten non-consecutive years.

"Based on our records, she never applied for any residency or citizenship permit after her marriage in 2009," Nurudin said.
