Jakarta (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister, Raja Juli Antoni, stated that social forestry plays a crucial and strategic role in achieving national food self-sufficiency.

"Social forestry supports food self-sufficiency, one of which is by optimizing social forestry areas through agroforestry," Antoni said in Jakarta on Thursday.

He further stated that the potential of social forestry land provides a form of support for the forestry sector in efforts to achieve national food self-sufficiency as a national strength.

"From the total 8.3 million hectares of Social Forestry Decrees that have been issued, there is potential for food development through agroforestry," he said.

He also said that through an agroforestry approach and the use of social forestry areas, communities could gain economic benefits from food crops such as corn while also preserving forest sustainability that supports life.

Previously, the Forestry Minister accompanied Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka in the simultaneous corn planting in Tigaraksa, Tangerang District, Banten, on Wednesday.

In addition to corn planting, they also conducted the corn harvest and released 80 thousand tilapia fry.

Corn planting in agroforestry systems offers both short-term economic benefits for communities and long-term environmental benefits through the preservation of forest functions.
