Hasanuddin University Rector Jamaluddin Jompa said the two institutions have maintained a cooperative relationship since signing a memorandum of understanding in 2020.
“Unhas is eager to continue growing and contributing at the international level,” Jompa said during a visit by CDU delegates to Makassar.
“We are ready to build strong, sustainable partnerships across various sectors,” he added.
Jompa highlighted the universities’ shared interest in developing joint and double degree programs as a tangible form of academic cooperation.
He added that Unhas has prior experience with bilateral agreements and joint funding schemes involving international partners.
Beyond academics, Jompa emphasized the importance of collaborative research, noting that Unhas has a wide range of disciplines and strong academic resources that can complement CDU’s strengths.
“We believe joint research can offer innovative solutions to global challenges. We are open to strong partnerships, including with Charles Darwin University," he added.
CDU Vice President of Global and External Relations Shannon Holborn said both universities share similar goals and values in expanding beneficial academic cooperation.
She described Unhas as the largest and most influential university in eastern Indonesia, while CDU plays a leading role in northern Australia.
Holborn said CDU has a long history with Makassar and sees value in preserving and strengthening the relationship.
She noted that fields such as health, agriculture, and animal science have strong potential for development through joint initiatives.
Both universities agreed to explore practical steps to deepen collaboration and expand the impact of education and research on local and global communities.
Unhas is regarded as a center of excellence in the eastern Indonesian region. Referring to this public university’s official website, Hasanuddin University was officially established on September 10, 1956.
Its roots trace back to 1947 in Makassar, when a Faculty of Economics was set up as a branch of the University of Indonesia (UI), based on a decision by the Dutch East Indies Government.
