Speaking on Friday, Trenggono confirmed that the ministry is intensifying coordination and negotiations with the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to ensure the continuation of shrimp exports, which he assured are safe and well-regulated.
“We are in constant discussions with the USFDA. Negotiations are ongoing, and I am confident everything will be fine. The key point is ensuring that the shrimp being shipped are controlled and free from radioactive material,” Trenggono said.
The ministry and USFDA have agreed to draft a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on shrimp product safety certification.
The USFDA has previously emphasized that the US market remains open to Indonesian shrimp products, provided they meet food safety standards.
Trenggono also clarified that the radiation concerns would not impact future trade tariff negotiations with the US. "No, this issue is unrelated to that," he said.
To address the situation, the government, through the Task Force for Handling Cs-137 Radiation Hazards, has strengthened coordination across various ministries and institutions to ensure the safety of export products, protect public health, and control domestic sources of contamination.
Bara Krishna Hasibuan, Head of the Diplomacy and Public Communications Division of the Task Force, said on Wednesday (10/8) that the government is committed to resolving the issue swiftly, transparently, and based on scientific evidence.
"Coordinated management measures are being implemented across ministries and institutions to ensure public safety and maintain the trust of international trading partners in Indonesian products," Krishna said.
In response to USFDA reports of possible contamination of Indonesian clove products, the government, through BAPETEN, has dispatched a team to conduct field inspections.
