Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Starting from January 2026, the Indonesian government will require all video games released in Indonesia to include an age rating label to protect children from inappropriate content, according to a ministry official.

"Every game circulating will be required to display its age classification, indicating the age group it is intended for," Director General of Digital Ecosystems at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs Edwin Hidayat Abdullah said in Badung, Bali, on Friday.

According to him, the age classification for games will be set through the Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS), which is scheduled to be announced at the Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) event in Badung, Bali, on Saturday (October 11).

He explained that every game developer must carry out an assessment to determine their games' age category. After that, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will carry out a periodic check to ensure the games are classified appropriately.

The age rating labels will comprise 3+, 7+, 13+, 15+, 18+, and RC.

"If the game contains violence that is not suitable for children, it must include an 18+ label," he said.

Furthermore, if there are games whose content does not align with the rating, the ministry will ask the age classification to be readjusted. However, if prohibited content such as pornography and gambling is found, the ministry will ban the game.

On that occasion, he also expressed concern over cases of children playing games that are not appropriate for their age, by using the credentials of adults around them.

To this end, Abdullah called for parents' and other family members' participation to ensure children in their families only access games that are suitable for their age.
