Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) confirmed that Indonesia can still export shrimp to the United States (US) despite tightened import regulations from US authorities.

Ishartini, Head of the Marine and Fisheries Product Quality Control and Supervision Agency, explained in an official statement in Jakarta on Saturday that the tightening only applies to certain companies and certain regions.

Ishartini stated that a company in the Cikande Industrial Estate in Serang cannot export shrimp because it is on the rejection list following the discovery of suspected radioactive contamination of Cesium-137 in its products.

However, the same company, located in Medan, North Sumatra, can continue to conduct exports as usual.

Meanwhile, Ishartini stated that shrimp processing companies in Java and Lampung can continue to conduct exports to the US, with the additional requirement of a certificate confirming that the product is free from radioactive contamination by Cesium-137.

The certificate is issued by the KKP Quality Agency, a certification body recognized by US authorities.

According to KKP data, 41 fish processing units (UPI) are directly affected by these additional requirements, consisting of 35 UPI in Java and six UPI in Lampung.

All units can still export shrimp to the US by providing a Cesium-137-free certificate issued by the KKP Quality Agency, an FDA-recognized certification body.

The KKP has also proposed that the quality certificate format commonly used by businesses can still be used, simply by adding the Cesium-137 test results.

The KKP SIAP MUTU digital system will be linked to the FDA's online system, the Import Transaction Auxiliary Communications System (ITACS), to expedite the customs inspection process.
