There are concerns that any delay will be used by Israel to resume military offensives,Jakarta (ANTARA) - A coalition of community organizations, youth groups, and student movements is set to hold a mass rally at the Patung Kuda area in Central Jakarta on Sunday morning (Oct. 12), in response to recent reports of a ceasefire in Gaza, Palestine.
The event’s organizer, Syauki Hafiz, said in Jakarta on Saturday that the demonstration will be held under the theme “Indonesia Against Genocide.”
Despite the positive news of a ceasefire, the organizers believe there remains a risk of renewed violence. Therefore, the rally aims to consolidate efforts and design a new movement framework with a greater impact.
“We want Indonesia to be actively involved in ensuring that genocide does not happen again, that ceasefire violations are not repeated, and that war in Gaza does not resume,” Hafiz said.
One of the main demands to be voiced at the rally is for President Prabowo Subianto to fulfill his pledge to deploy 20,000 Indonesian peacekeeping troops to Gaza — a promise he made during his address at the United Nations General Assembly on September 23.
According to Hafiz, the momentum to deploy these troops must be seized immediately to prevent any opportunity for Israel to launch renewed military operations.
“There are concerns that any delay will be used by Israel to resume military offensives,” Hafiz warned.
He expressed hope that the deployment of the 20,000 Indonesian peacekeeping troops could be realized soon to help safeguard the ceasefire process and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.
In addition to urging a more active role from the Indonesian government, Hafiz also emphasized the international community’s responsibility in ensuring lasting peace in Palestine.
“We are also demanding that the international community uphold its responsibility to maintain the ceasefire, end the genocide, and take part in rebuilding Gaza,” he added.
Early Thursday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas had reached an agreement on the first phase of his ceasefire and prisoner exchange plan.
The Israeli army began its gradual troop withdrawal from the Gaza Strip on Friday and is expected to complete its pullout to locations specified in Trump’s plan within 24 hours, according to Israeli media reports.
