Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has assured the public that safety and investment sustainability in the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate, Serang, Banten, remain secure following reports of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) radiation exposure in the area.

Agus said all mitigation and response efforts are being coordinated across ministries to prevent any impact on public health or industrial activities. The Ministry of Industry is ensuring that operations in Cikande continue under safe and controlled conditions.

“We are committed to maintaining industrial operations in line with public safety principles and environmental standards. This radiation issue must be handled swiftly, scientifically, and transparently to protect public trust in domestic manufacturing,” Agus said in a statement.

The ministry is coordinating with the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), and local authorities to monitor and contain potential contamination from the detected radiation source within the industrial area.

Early coordination has led to measured mitigation steps, including on-site monitoring by a joint inter-ministerial team. The government has also formed a special task force to address Cesium-137 radiation and potential health impacts on nearby communities.

The Industry Ministry, an active member of the task force, emphasized that raw materials, production processes, and distribution in the estate remain unaffected. No evidence suggests any impact on the supply chain or quality of manufactured products.

“Indonesian manufactured goods are safe and meet international quality standards. We routinely conduct supervision and certification through industrial standardization agencies. The public should remain confident in the safety of domestic products,” Agus said.

He added that maintaining public safety is crucial to sustaining global confidence in Indonesian exports. The ministry continues coordination with relevant institutions to ensure the radiation issue does not harm Indonesia’s industrial reputation internationally.

The government is also working to ensure that industrial estate management remains stable and investment-friendly after the incident. Mitigation efforts are being carried out without disrupting economic activities or investor operations in Cikande.

“We guarantee that Indonesia’s industrial zones, including Cikande, remain safe and competitive for investment. This situation is an opportunity to strengthen industrial safety management and environmental governance,” Agus said.

The ministry is preparing new guidelines to reinforce industrial environmental governance, including an integrated monitoring system involving estate operators, local governments, and technical ministries to prevent similar risks in the future.

The Modern Cikande Industrial Estate, established in 1991 and managed by PT Modern Industrial Estate, covers 1,463 hectares. It hosts 271 tenants, of which 181 are operational, employing more than 45,000 workers in Banten Province.

As part of its strategic steps, the ministry is strengthening supervision standards, accelerating construction of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) scheduled for completion by late 2026, and integrating oversight data through the National Industrial Information System (SIINas).
