Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto warned the younger generation about the dangers of technology abuse, stressing that while digital tools offer immense learning opportunities, they can also be weaponized to spread misinformation and deceit.

“Technology can help us tremendously, and we must not fear it. But at the same time, we must remain vigilant. The people need to be informed that not everything on YouTube or social media is true or good,” he said here on Saturday.

He made these remarks during his speech at the graduation ceremony for 521 undergraduate students at the University of the Republic of Indonesia (UKRI) in Bandung, West Java.

He emphasized that technological advancement is a double-edged sword, offering access to information while also posing risks of manipulation.

The President shared personal experiences of being a victim of digital manipulation, including fake videos that made it appear as though he could sing or give speeches in foreign languages such as Mandarin and Arabic.

He also mentioned the misuse of old images and videos to manipulate the public. According to him, such examples show how sophisticated technology, including AI, can produce content that appears convincing but is fundamentally false.

Despite the risks, Prabowo acknowledged the benefits of technology, especially for learning. He contrasted the resources available to the current generation with his own experience of relying solely on books.

He shared that he continues to dedicate two to four hours each day to learning by reading books.

“Now, young people have incredible tools like YouTube, the internet. Back in my day, there was no ChatGPT. You're lucky,” he pointed out.
