Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has requested that a portion of the Rp13.2 trillion (US$800 million) recovered from a major crude palm oil export corruption case be allocated for scholarships.

The President instructed Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa to facilitate the transfer of the returned funds to the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), which manages scholarships for Indonesian students.

"Perhaps, from the Rp13 trillion handed over by the Attorney General to the finance minister today, we can allocate a portion of it for future scholarships," the President said as he opened a plenary cabinet meeting in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the government intends to increase funding for LPDP scholarships through budget efficiency measures and the use of funds recovered from corruption cases, including those from the crude palm oil export case.

"We will provide more funds to LPDP. Funds from budget cuts and those recovered from corruptors can be invested in LPDP instead," Prabowo remarked.

On Monday, Indonesian Attorney General ST Burhanuddin officially handed over Rp13.2 trillion recovered from the crude palm oil export corruption case to the government, represented by Finance Minister Sadewa and witnessed by President Prabowo.

According to the Attorney General, the funds were retrieved from three companies involved in the case: Wilmar Group, Musim Mas Group, and Permata Hijau Group.

Burhanuddin stated that the state suffered Rp17 trillion (US$1.26 billion) in losses from the case, and the three companies were ordered to return the funds.

Wilmar Group returned Rp11.88 trillion (US$771.6 million), while Musim Mas Group handed over Rp1.8 trillion (US$108.6 million) and Permata Hijau Group Rp1.86 billion (US$112 thousand).

The total amount returned stood at Rp13.225 trillion, with Musim Mas Group and Permata Hijau Group still responsible for repaying the remaining Rp4.4 trillion (US$265.6 million).
