He linked the food security drive to President Prabowo’s recent call for proper clean water management during a forum on the implementation of Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025, which promotes the conversion of urban waste into renewable energy through environmentally friendly technologies.
“During last night’s cabinet meeting, Mr. President highlighted the importance of clean water. Why? Because it is closely related to food security, and he is determined to strengthen Indonesia’s food resilience,” Hendropriyono stated at the forum in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Echoing the President’s stance, he noted that the quality of waste management directly affects the availability of clean water. “In other words, poor waste management will certainly lead to polluted water,” he remarked.
The deputy minister explained that the presidential regulation discussed at the forum serves as a strategic instrument to reduce the volume of waste ending up in landfills and minimize pollution caused by leachate.
He further noted that President Prabowo had set a target for Indonesia to manage 51 percent of its waste properly this year and achieve full, 100-percent waste management by the end of his term in 2029.
Hendropriyono then called on all stakeholders, including regional governments and the business community, to contribute to advancing waste-to-energy (WTE) projects nationwide.
“Regional governments are responsible for preparing the necessary land, and I believe that four to five hectares would be ideal for a WTE site. It is also important to ensure water access,” he pointed out.
Earlier, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq revealed that his ministry had submitted a verification report on several proposed regions for WTE projects to the Indonesian Investment Management Agency Danantara.
The regions include Sleman and Bantul in Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Badung in Bali, Bogor and Depok in West Java, and Medan and Deli Serdang in North Sumatra.
As Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara is tasked with leading the management of such projects, as mandated by the aforementioned presidential regulation.
