"This visa cancellation complies with applicable laws and regulations. This principle is also based on the 1945 Constitution, which respects security and public order, as well as the Indonesian government's obligation to maintain international order," he said on Thursday.
Thohir conveyed this statement in response to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) call urging international sports federations not to stage events in Indonesia following the recent visa cancellation for the Israeli gymnastics contingent.
According to the minister, the Indonesian government had strong grounds for rejecting the Israeli delegation, due to security and public order concern.
He acknowledged that the decision has consequences, while Indonesia refuses Israel’s presence, the IOC also bans Indonesia from hosting world championships, the Olympics, the Youth Olympic Games, or any Olympic-related events.
However, he emphasized that the Indonesian government remains committed to preparing a blueprint for national sports development, including strengthening 17 leading sports and establishing a national team training center.
The government is also committed to playing an active role in various international sporting events, from regional to global arenas.
In an official statement, the IOC expressed concern about restrictions on athletes' access to host countries, as well as boycotts and competition cancellations due to political tensions.
"These actions deprive athletes of their right to compete peacefully and prevent the Olympic Movement from showing the power of sport," the Executive Committee said on its website.
The IOC reiterated its principled position that all eligible athletes, teams, and sports officials should be able to participate in international competitions without discrimination by the host country.
