Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasized that algorithms and codes in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) must reflect the positive values of Indonesian society to ensure that the technology brings beneficial outcomes.

“When we fail to use AI positively, the systems we build can become frightening, harmful, and even dangerous,” Meutya said in her remarks at the Kumparan AI for Indonesia event here on Thursday.

She noted that Indonesia is among the countries that view AI development with optimism and is not afraid to use it in daily activities.

This attitude, she said, is a good sign, as several studies indicate that AI could create up to 90 million new jobs in fields such as data science and human-AI collaboration.

From an economic standpoint, AI is also projected to contribute as much as 15.7 trillion rupiah to global revenue by 2030.

According to Meutya, a report from Cisco shows that Indonesia has significant opportunities in AI development, driven by the nation’s high level of technology adoption.

“Basically, Indonesians are enthusiastic and quick to adopt AI. The next question is, what do they use it for? But in principle, this is already a positive signal for major companies like Cisco, as Indonesians adapt quickly to AI,” she explained.

She added that at the grassroots level, Indonesians have already begun using AI to solve real problems, such as in fish farming.

To maximize this potential, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is formulating a national roadmap for AI utilization that can be applied across various sectors to ensure broad benefits for society.

“The key aspects in developing this roadmap include regulation, ethics, investment, financing, infrastructure, talent, research and innovation, and use cases,” Meutya said.

She explained that the two main goals of AI development in Indonesia are to drive economic growth and productivity while enhancing global competitiveness through ethical, equitable, and balanced talent and innovation.

Meutya also stressed the importance of making AI utilization more inclusive, as its vast potential across multiple sectors should be accessible to all regions and demographics, without gender limitations.

She concluded by urging both the public and the government to use AI wisely and to listen carefully to input regarding the formulation of rules for technology use in Indonesia’s digital ecosystem.
