In a statement posted on APEC’s official website, the ministers said emerging technologies are reshaping productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable economic growth throughout the Asia-Pacific.
South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Yun Cheol Koo, who chaired the joint session, said he asked ChatGPT for recommendations on how APEC economies could best promote artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
“ChatGPT responded that each economy should build institutional foundations, strengthen human resources, and expand digital infrastructure and investment,” Koo said.
“It also suggested that APEC work together to ensure policy consistency, interoperability, and safe technology use. I fully agree with this direction,” Koo added.
Koo said the challenge is translating those ideas into concrete action, noting that the economic benefits of AI may not be evenly shared.
He cited a domestic study showing that full AI adoption could boost South Korea’s productivity by 1.12% to 3.2% and raise its gross domestic product by 4.2% to 12.6%, offsetting the nation’s demographic challenges.

The talks emphasized how innovation can deliver real benefits to businesses, communities, and workers.
Officials also exchanged experiences on policies to promote interoperability, strengthen institutional capacity, and build digital skills.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development presented findings on the economic effects of digital transformation, while South Korea introduced plans for the 2026 APEC Economic Policy Report focusing on structural reform and AI-driven transformation.
The report will be prepared by APEC’s Economic Committee and Policy Support Unit to help economies maximize opportunities in AI and digital technology.
The joint session preceded the APEC Structural Reform Ministerial Meeting, where ministers are expected to continue discussions on improving competitiveness and sustainable growth across the region.
