Jakarta (ANTARA) - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva advocated for more balanced and independent global trade through local currency settlement, including in bilateral trade with Indonesia.

Speaking alongside President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Lula emphasized the shared commitment to avoiding a new Cold War and promoting free trade beyond reliance on the US dollar.

He urged developing nations like Brazil and Indonesia to unite in pursuit of fairer trade systems, stressing that the 21st century demands bold reforms absent in the previous era.

Lula reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism over unilateralism and economic democracy over protectionism.

Both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation across sectors—economy, science and technology, culture, and politics—without dependence on global powers.

Lula also underscored their joint responsibility to foster inclusive growth, job creation, and improved welfare.

“We aim to grow, create new jobs, and ensure a decent life for our people. This is the mandate entrusted to us as leaders,” he said during his state visit to Jakarta.

The visit included a series of meetings and the signing of eight MoUs worth over US$5 billion.

Lula’s trip to Jakarta follows Prabowo’s reciprocal visit to Brasília on July 9, 2025, and forms part of his broader Southeast Asia tour.
