Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Timor-Leste officially submitted its instruments of accession to the ASEAN Charter and the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) on Saturday, marking its entry as the bloc’s 11th member.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, speaking at the accession ceremony, said Timor-Leste’s participation in the nuclear-weapon-free zone strengthens ASEAN’s role as a region committed to unity and peace.

“We welcome not only a new ASEAN member, but also our commitment to an inclusive, resilient, and peaceful community ready for the future,” Hasan said.

He added that Timor-Leste’s membership in SEANWFZ will inject new momentum into ASEAN’s efforts to maintain regional security and stability.

Hasan noted that ASEAN has become a global symbol of neutrality and a safe harbor amid geopolitical tensions, maintaining cohesion despite uncertainties and competition among major powers.

Economically, he said, ASEAN’s collective vision remains strong. Initiatives like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) continue to deepen integration, strengthen supply chains, and attract global investment.

At the same time, ASEAN is expanding partnerships with India, Australia, the European Union, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, enhancing the bloc’s strategic autonomy.

“ASEAN’s collective strength is increasingly recognized worldwide, as member states stand together and act as one,” Hasan said.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono also attended the ceremony, underscoring the regional significance of Timor-Leste’s accession and the continued unity of ASEAN members.

Timor-Leste’s formal entry into the bloc reflects ASEAN’s commitment to inclusivity, regional stability, and economic resilience as the organization navigates global challenges.
