KKP Director General of Capture Fisheries Lotharia Latif underlined that President Prabowo Subianto has designated KNMP as one of his flagship programs to strengthen people’s economic self-reliance.
“The KNMP program and the revitalization of ports are projected to drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and elevate the living standards of Indonesian fishermen,” he remarked in Cirebon City, West Java, on Sunday.
He explained that the government has implemented the KNMP program in 100 locations across Indonesia as part of the first phase, with a broader plan to upgrade about 1,000 villages by 2029.
Latif reiterated that the people-oriented initiative is designed to ensure equitable economic development so coastal communities can equally benefit from national progress.
The program focuses on building and upgrading key infrastructure in coastal villages, including docks, roads, drainage canals, and electricity systems. It also provides cold storage facilities, ice production units, boat repair and maintenance workshops, logistics kiosks, and specialized fuel stations for fishing vessels.
The KKP official emphasized the importance of cross-sector synergy to ensure the national program achieves its objectives.
“We cannot work alone. It is crucial that all parties align steps to deliver tangible benefits for fishermen,” he said.
He added that the ministry held a national dialogue for fishermen in Cirebon to strengthen communication between the government and stakeholders in the fisheries sector.
“The government aims to maintain reliable public communication channels. We are willing to discuss any regulations that need adjustment,” he stated.
President Prabowo has stated that the KNMP program, though recently launched, has already produced concrete results.
“The program’s pilot project in Merauke (South Papua) has increased fishermen’s incomes by 100 percent,” he noted in his speech at a plenary Cabinet session at the State Palace in Jakarta on October 20.
He also mentioned that the government aims to construct 1,582 modern fishing boats with capacities starting at 30 gross tons, with completion targeted by the end of 2027.
The boat modernization initiative is expected to strengthen the national fisheries sector, boost production, and increase the community’s protein supply.
