Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Health Ministry has awarded fellowships to 867 medical specialists as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare education, support health system transformation, and expand access to quality medical services nationwide.

Health Ministry Director General for Human Resources, Yuli Farianti, announced the figure on Monday during the commemoration of National Doctors’ Day 2025.

She said the fellowship program targets treatment for priority diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, and uro-nephrology disorders.

Since May 2023, the Health Ministry has partnered with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) to provide scholarships and fellowships for medical professionals to pursue advanced studies both in Indonesia and abroad.

This year’s National Doctors’ Day carries the theme “Doctors Sharing with the Nation,” highlighting physicians’ commitment to share knowledge, time, and energy to improve public health, Farianti said.

She acknowledged challenges facing doctors, including high education costs and the need to align medical curricula with global standards. To address this, the government has expanded scholarships and fellowships to improve training quality.

So far, 27 hospitals in Indonesia and 48 overseas facilities have been designated as fellowship training centers, she said.

The ministry has also strengthened partnerships with universities, professional bodies, and health institutions at home and abroad to support training and clinical research.

Farianti added that the ministry is collaborating with medical collegiums, the National Health Council, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to reform specialist education.

Other initiatives include expanding university- and hospital-based specialist training and launching 148 new study programs at 57 medical faculties nationwide, comprising 125 specialist, 23 subspecialist, and 25 general medicine and dentistry programs.

The ministry also introduced a national competency exam to standardize healthcare qualifications and ensure equitable access to high-quality care.

Farianti expressed hope that young doctors would become innovators and educators as well as healers, serving with integrity and dedication to the nation.
