Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar has urged the public to remain cautious about job offers in Cambodia, warning that the country is not an officially recognized destination for Indonesian migrant workers.

“We continue to campaign and raise awareness that Cambodia is not a safe destination for our migrant workers,” Muhaimin said in Jakarta on Monday.

He stressed that any job offer involving placement in Cambodia should be considered illegal, as Indonesia and Cambodia have yet to establish formal cooperation to ensure the safety and rights of Indonesian workers.

According to Muhaimin, the government—through the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI)—has repeatedly issued warnings advising prospective migrant workers against choosing Cambodia as a work destination.

However, for those already employed in Cambodia, the government continues to pursue protection efforts through close coordination among the P2MI Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.

“If workers are already there, systematic protection efforts must be carried out by P2MI and all relevant sectors,” Muhaimin said.

He added that the Indonesian government, through its embassy in Phnom Penh, maintains open communication channels and provides assistance to Indonesian workers facing difficulties in Cambodia.

Muhaimin also urged prospective migrant workers to ensure that their overseas employment is processed through official and verified channels under the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), in order to prevent human trafficking, which frequently targets Southeast Asian workers.
