Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) reaffirmed the government’s commitment to monitoring and optimizing airport operations nationwide to ensure they deliver tangible benefits to communities.

In a press statement on Friday, AHY emphasized that regional interconnectivity is vital for inclusive development. “We must move beyond a Java-centric mindset. Our focus spans from Aceh to Papua,” he said, noting ongoing coordination with the Minister of Transportation.

This initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to enhance the productivity of underutilized airports.

AHY stressed that infrastructure must be supported by robust connectivity and surrounding economic activity to be effective.

Given Indonesia’s vast geography—comprising over 17,000 islands—air transport plays a critical role in fostering equitable development and economic growth.

Strengthening airport infrastructure is therefore central to boosting regional competitiveness.

AHY highlighted the government’s cross-sector synchronization efforts to integrate airports with hubs of economic, tourism, and logistics activity.

“When airports are well-distributed and efficiently managed, they can significantly support the tourism sector,” he noted.

He underscored that airport development is not solely about transportation, but part of a broader strategy to stimulate local economies.

“Tourists—both domestic and international—can drive growth for micro, small, and medium enterprises, as well as the creative economy,” AHY added.

Indonesia currently operates 35 international airports designated as gateways under Minister of Transportation Decree No. 31/2024.

Beyond these, numerous domestic and pioneering airfields serve regions across the archipelago, reinforcing the country’s commitment to inclusive connectivity and regional advancement.
