Manokwari, West Papua (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka said Tuesday that the government plans to build 24 hospitals across Papua as part of the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan.

The hospital construction is among the government’s top priorities to improve healthcare and ensure equal access for people in the six Papuan provinces, he said during a meeting at the State Treasury Building in Manokwari, West Papua.

“In the 2025–2029 RPJMN, the government will build 24 hospitals in the Papua region,” Gibran said.

He said the new facilities will include mammography units, CT scans, cardiac catheterization labs, MRI machines, and specialist doctors.

The hospitals are expected to meet the region’s healthcare needs and eliminate the need for patients to travel to Sulawesi or Java for treatment, he added.

“This should be our shared commitment. In the future, no Papuans should have to seek medical care outside their region,” he said.

Gibran said he expects the creation of two special agencies in Papua to help accelerate development and improve welfare for local communities.

The new bodies are the Steering Committee for the Acceleration of Papuan Special Autonomy Development (BP3OKP) and the Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Papuan Special Autonomy Development (KEP2OKP).

“With these new institutions, I’m asking for development to move twice as fast,” he said.

The two agencies, particularly the executive committee inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto last month, are designed to work in synergy to carry out the president’s development vision for Papua.

Gibran said Papua’s development must be consistent and sustainable to reduce regional disparities and improve quality of life.

He stressed that accurate local data is crucial for the central government to plan and implement effective programs.

“Development in Papua cannot just happen for one or two years. It must be sustainable,” he said, citing key indicators such as life expectancy, stunting rates, and healthcare access.
